Home made sledge

I have always wanted to make a sledge.
I don't really know why, I guess romantic ideas about snow and the fact that they are a challenge, not rocket science, but they need to slide and if they don't work, they really don't. The past few years trying to sledge on a variety of things including wheely bin lids and cardboard boxes in plastic bags have highlighted this for me! There is also the added challenge that in this country the snow never lasts very long so you either have to be thinking about it before there is any snow and make one preemptively (a bit to organised for me) or think fast on your feet and have the right materials to hand.

This year I did it! With a bit of help from Billy and his friend Elliot* we sucessfully managed to turn an old chair I had, 2 weeks ago, put out on my balcony on it's way to the scrap heap as the legs kept giving way whenever a guest sat on it, throwing them to the floor, into a great looking sledge that runs on its runners. I didn't take any 'before and after' shots unfortunately to show you blow by blow how we did it but the basics were I detached the seat and the front 2 legs from the chair back then screwed the the seat flat onto the back. I got lucky, it turned out the uprights on the back rest of this particular chair were shaped just like sledge runners and the cross bars make perfect foot rests.

Above is a picture of Billy getting ready to go sledging on Leyton Marshes.

*I love being a mum who is teaching her son and his friends how to use a screwdriver properly.
